lokee musiks sophomore release features newcomer afriqua. a 21 year old from virginia, usa and currently based in berlin. this fledgling producer and student of the royal academy of music sparked interest with lokee when they met at one of their famous after hours in london. the title track here is melt & features broken groove with afriquas minimal perspective. electric pulse stabs are at the heart of this rhythm and drive it with a much appreciated space. vocals from sorcha richardson adds an eerie anthemic touch reminiscent of somewhere between the cocteau twins & fever ray

fresh out of melbournes reputed house scene, the tortoise is one of the hottest talents to emerge from the current wave of house breaking down under. a side the puffing tortoise captures the 21-year-olds precocious talent and aims it squarely at the peak time. working his trademark airy vocals around a familiar disco refrain and bubbling bass, he works the track into a sweaty climax and skilfully keeps it there throughout the midsection. turning in a late night chugger on their remix, berlin based canadians the mole and hreno ride an insistent pulse and insect like percussion. twisting the samples, they guide the track into a dark jungle of chattering sounds to temper the tortoise youthful exuberance. the analogue melancholy of keep on keepin on is all in the sweeping synths and twinkling effects. recoiling the tension, the chicago influenced track seeps through the speakers and will sound as good at home as it will during specially chosen dancefloor moments. rondenion approaches the title track with fearless disregard for the original, combining the swelling tortoise sound with something entirely his own. his addition of a funk fuelled midsection, really breaks the track down and adds another slice of character to an ep already brimming with it.

christian smiths tronic label enjoyed a fantastic year in 2011, persistently receiving plaudits from the media, scene tastemakers and the record buying public for the labels consistently first-rate output that consisted of a genre-blurring mixture of tech house and progressive flavoured techno floor-smashing grooves. since meeting in berlin during summer of 2011, christian smith and florian meindl have stuck up a productive studio partnership. having released their first collaboration - desire - via meindls flash imprint in december, this subsequent ep for tronic sees the duo take their corporation a stage further with a two tracks of slightly left of centre yet unashamedly peak-time tech house. mothership leads off the ep with a distinctive retro-electro bassline that builds into the main hook via a series of peaks and drops before taking off into a tweaked crescendo of high-pitched tones. red alert opts for a subtler approach, creating its simple but effective groove from jacking percussion and wobbly synth stabs, which pulse throughout, morphing to distorting and echoing in the break.

next amazing thoughtless moover by stare5 aka bryan zentz with a huge remix of noah pred. known for his distinctive productions over the years as barada, cyan and under his own name on seminal techno labels such as primate, tronic, jericho, plus 8 and cmyk, bryan zentz reprises his stare5 role for thoughtless with three tracks of dub-fueled deepness. pushing ever outward on tides of subsonic bass, >the sprawl< emerges from cover of night, a vast expanse of sleepless chords illuminating the darkness as ripples of reverberant effects reach toward the stars. label boss noah pred adds another layer to the low end to imbue his remix with a swinging pulse, then intensifies the hypnosis with a sinuous synth that snakes its way through a winding labyrinth built from the materials of the original. >frozen fog< opens with cold yet insistent stabs that keep pace atop a bouncing dub bass line, responsive chords building pressure amidst gradually rising vapors. with equal nods to detroit and berlin, bryan zentz successfully presents his own unique vision of a classic form with >the sprawl< - solidifying his reputation as a master of the style in the process.

never ones to stand still dons rainbow marks a quantum leap for seahawks, the first release on new label ocean moon and the first recording from the invisible sunrise sessions. invisible sunrise is the forthcoming album from seahawks and the first to be recorded with live musicians rather than a hard drive full of dusty old samples. the results are stunningly original, not least on this track with new york head autre ne veut. anvs debut album last year on olde english spelling bee was an incredible rush of warped r&b, 80s synths, amazing songs and what has to be one of the most innovative voices to emerge in the last 5 years. since then hes released a great ep on hippos in tanks, played some mind bending live shows and guested on the ford & lopatin album. dons rainbow sounds like michael mcdonalds sweet freedom crossed with nite flight era walker brothers. a fantastic piece of hazy avant pop with jan hammer pulse wave synths, yah mo b there drums and fuzz drenched spirals of soprano sax and guitar colliding with the sound of soul from outer space. on the flip the dub takes the track into a world of shadows, where smeared washes of sound swim in an ocean of decay. as always with seahawks releases the packaging is beautiful. heavyweight vinyl in a full colour sleeve, with full colour labels. the last seahawks release sold out in days, we expect this one to do the same, so get your skates on!

exceptional debut album!!early support by groove magazine, resident advisor, oliver hafenbauer, gerd janson, lawrence more to come.. sometimes things in life never occur as planned. so it happend to edward aka. gilles aiken, when the berlinbased artist was looking for a new apartment. somehow he found himself moving to a very small fairy tale-like village called teupitz in brandenburg, germany. it was there were edward rediccovered his deep love for nature and silence. with long extensive walks along the teupitzer lake he got to the bottom of his true love for house music. within the silence he could still hear a distant pulse of basslines ringing. and after release for giegling, blooming soul and white it was time to make the next step. with all the nature surrounding him, he finally felt able to get all the music out. music which ended up as his debut album, simply called teupitz

the reasons of the space probes blackout are still unknown. sharp and synchronised movements revealed mysterious devices and something started to pulse in the cloudy air, followed by upbeat sonic layers. i thought i was listening to a new, indecipherable, form of language. at the same time, without any friction, the nature of the emission changed again into a sort of weaving of sonic textures twisting all around me, fast and shifty. the only evidence of the facts i just reported is what i leave for you to listen to.

the moustached disco avengers at sccucci manucci drop their latest missive, featuring more transmissions from the disco underground. argentinean based toomy disco provides >what goes around<, a tightly produced disco-house number with horn snippets woven around low-slung grooves, whilst the glue deliver >without you< a hazy slo-mo looper with vocal teases and hypnotic guitar licks. on the flip, south west seven lock themselves into a fast moving groove with >what have i got to do<, a track that contrasts its fast rhythmic pulse with vocals and guitars that slowly emerge from the filtered ether. aeromaschine close proceedings with >deep champagne<, combining a deep and melodic bassline with improvisational touches and glitchy vocal stutters, it successfully forges its own sound whilst keeping in line with his disco counterparts.

what a listening pleasure! arsen1computerklub is back with his vinyl ep wont you come. here he does himself proud and provides us with two well balanced but rootical tracks that have a lot to offer. emotionally rousing like a thrilling poem, wont you come is taking us charmingly sexy on a journey into spherical realms that you simply cannot escape from. pressing low-tuned basses together with sharp sound passages - almost hymnic - characterise the groove of his tracks. with bacteria we are allowed to sit back, relax and enjoy the seductive flow. the track bacteria with its driving pace, raw and unpolished, is indeed having its finger firmly on the pulse. labels friend kleinschmageraudio is transforming the track wont you come into a breathtaking remix being in fact a sly old dog. with its stomping rhythm the remix is whooshing into your auditory cannels. marvellous!

droid resident artists david flores (audio injection / truncate) and vangelis + vidal vargas (raiz) combine their production elements on the degrees of motion ep. david has been burning up the industry charts with his latest raw vibe alias truncate. the spring/summer season in europe would have been quite silent had it not been for the phrases concentrate and focus. with releases and remixes on enemy, modularz and his own truncate imprint, david has enjoyed strong support from renowned acts dettmann, klock, luke slater, chris liebing, speedy j, dvs1 and countless others. the members of raiz, vangelis and vidal vargas, have also been making waves with their work on historia y violencia, silent steps, gynoid, and droid. on this collaboration david and the vargas brothers combine the dry and groovy tool perfection of truncate with the concept and sense of depth raiz has been developing over the last year. the result is a series of 3 flawless tracks exemplifying the degrees of motion. inertia builds the ep with heavy drum programming and warm pad work. flux takes the energy up a notch with hard swing percussion, sharp analog noise and arctic synthesis. jude law leaves his seed. rhythm completes the cycle with a deeply grounded pulse, accented by an enigmatic call to consciousness and presence. degrees of motion is a solid showcase of this production teams potential.

breaking onto the scene via a series of anonymous 12inch, it was after garnering reverence as a big name producer in disguise that cottam was unveiled to be the humble newcomer paul cottam. rising through the early rave scene in his hometown of preston, he first cut his teeth as a dj warming up for the likes of surgeon, dave clarke and regis. despite his techno upbringing, it was the slo-mo tempos of mark e and the revenge that inspired cottam to produce his own brand of dusty soul and hip hop-grounded house. however, in april cottam returned to his roots with >sunrise sunset< on use of weapons, sinking a rave core down to his signature slung bpm. it is a journey into sub-aquatic acid house that began with a series of remixes for luv jam, pattern select and morning factory, and one that he continues to explore on his aus music debut. aptly titled >deep deep down< sculpts the feeling of acid techno into warm slo-mo house. ukrainian producer vakula takes the track off on another tangent entirely, stripping away its propulsive chugging heartbeat and replacing it with an off-kilter, spaced-out pulse reminiscent of theo parrish when he s in that kind groove. on the flip, >twang< is a return to cottam s brand of languid, soulful house, steeped with groove destined to incite the dancefloor shuffle.

g.h. is gary howell, longtime associate of modern love as one half of pendle coven and sometime contributor to the hate project. the ground ep features howells first material produced outside of pendle coven and takes on a much darker, more stripped down aesthetic - making use of location recordings amassed over the last decade. the title track extends over 7 minutes from a solitary bass pulse into a slow, three dimensional industrial reduction heaving with uncomfortable bass weight and a sense of nervous expectation. its like the bare, skeletal noise framework for darkest junglist hardcore stripped of its percussion - all bar a bass drum and intense shards of noise. albedo has more of a swing to it, dominated by a growling bassline and the metallic clunk of disjointed percussion at odds with the squashed funk lurking somewhere at its core. the template is extended on earth, a brilliantly discordant club variant that sounds like an r&b mastertrack exploded into 100 constituent parts and put together not entirely in the right order. it builds and collapses into itself, a stylistic oddity that at one and the same time brings to mind boards of canadas re- working of colonel abrams - trapped and the extreme frequency vortex of the raster noton lab
